Part of my larger Evening Mass. A soloist introduces the congregational melody, which is easily learned without written music (although a written congregational insert is included here). Whether or not your church uses the traditional parts of the mass, this piece serves as a soulful cry asking for God's mercy-- I've used the piece in "liturgical" and "non-liturgical" settings, with great response.

This setting is part of a larger mass that I originally wrote for All Angels' Church in Manhattan. I originally introduced the piece with a gospel choir before having the whole congregation join in. The music can be easily picked up by ear, and is a joyful way to begin the Eucharist.

The text of I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say was written by Scottish poet Horatius Bonar in 1846. The sense of rest and surrender in the imagery is central to my resetting.

A simple, swinging congregational refrain ("Let my prayer rise before you as incense; the lifting of my hands as the evening sacrifice") alternates with soloist verses. Jazz players can easily improvise over the form.

This piece was written for myself and two other women to sing a cappella at a lessons and carols service. The text came out of meditating on the Magnificat (see Luke 1:46-55).

Never Before - Three-part vocal score with rehearsal piano reduction

The hymn tune of O, the Deep, Deep Love (commonly known in hymnal indexes as Ebenezer, or Ton-y-Botel) was written by Welsh composer Thomas J. Williams in 1890. Though several different texts have been set to Williams’ tune, the one that informed my arrangement was written in 1875 by Samuel Francis. Francis’ text speaks of the love of God as an ocean that is all around us, free and deep and always moving.

O, the Deep, Deep Love- leadsheet

A vocal solo setting of the well-loved Fanny Crosby lyric, "Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior."  The text of this piece is so heartfelt- like one of the Psalms that cry out to God- that I had to put my own stamp on the music to make it my own prayer.

Song of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis) is a New Testament canticle from the second chapter of Luke.

English poet Frances Havergal composed her best known text in 1874. The words offer a prayer of complete surrender to God, almost addressing God as a lover. My setting was originally written as a vocal duet, but can also be performed by a solo vocalist.
